Porsche covers a lot of ground—both on the open road and on the Web.

Why is a sports-car manufacturer designing aircraft for urban spaces? “Porsche is developing into a leading brand for premium mobility,” explains Detlev von Platen, Member of the Porsche AG Executive Board Sales and Marketing. “Over the long term, that can also include the third dimension.” Porsche is taking its first step toward aviation in conjunction with a world-renowned aviation group. Together with Boeing and its subsidiary Aurora Flight Sciences, Porsche has begun development on a prototype for the attractive future market for premium urban air mobility. The partners are working on developing high-end aircraft that will provide faster and more efficient transportation than currently available from conventional sources in metropolitan areas.

Spectacular back-seat vision

Porsche has always been known for its visionary ideas, especially when it comes to innovative technologies—both under the hood and in the car’s interior. Elastic content is the latest development by Porsche engineers in cooperation with the start-up Holoride in Munich. This refers to a very innovative and spectacular form of in-car entertainment: a VR headset linked to a Porsche’s sensors shows 2-D or 3-D content that matches the car’s movements in real time. When the Porsche turns to the right in the real world, the projection moves exactly along with it. The prototype has already been presented, with initial scenarios including underwater worlds and cities of the future. Media giant Discovery is providing the content, and the market launch is scheduled for 2021.

“May the Force be with you”

The year 1977 marked the launch of the Star Wars saga, the legendary science fiction series starring Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Darth Vader, and C-3PO. Forty-two years later, in mid-December 2019, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will have its world premiere—but only after Porsche and Lucasfilm, the Star Wars production company, present a joint design for a spaceship. It will combine the DNA from Porsche Design with iconic design attributes from Star Wars. “Close collaboration with the Star Wars design team has been very fruitful for us,” says Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche. “I’m sure that both sides will benefit greatly from this exchange.”
