Faster and Smarter: The Driver Experience in the New Macan
The sports car brand’s first all-electric SUV features the latest generation of the intuitive Porsche display and operating concept. It will gradually also be incorporated into the other model series.
The trailblazing driver experience includes up to three screens. The 12.6-inch fully digital curved display is situated directly in the driver’s line of sight. There is a 10.9-inch full-HD touch display in the center of the dashboard. Like on a smartphone, the driver can place their apps in the direct access area. The optional front-seat passenger display is likewise 10.9 inches. This can be used to view central display content, adjust the infotainment or navigation settings, and stream videos, even while driving: a special film covering means this display cannot be seen from the driver’s seat.
A head-up display with augmented reality technology is available upon request for the first time. Location-specific AR details are projected in color into the actual image of the surroundings, such as navigation arrows that appear in the correct turning lane. The functions of numerous driver assistance systems are also supported. When adaptive cruise control is activated, for example, a chosen distance to the vehicle in front can be displayed virtually as a carpet of dots across the road. Driver assistance system warnings can likewise be incorporated as AR. Porsche has fundamentally modernized the connectivity offerings in the new Macan. For example, passengers can directly access third-party apps like Spotify and YouTube in the Porsche App Center, and then install them in the car. The App Center is being continuously developed and is designed to keep the vehicle up to date throughout its life cycle. In the navigation app, monthly map updates and updating of the map data relevant to route calculation result in a high-quality customer experience. Thanks to online charging route calculation, trips that include charging stops can now be planned in a matter of seconds, taking into account the customer’s preferences concerning charging point type and provider.
The Porsche Communication Management (PCM) response time takes things to a new level: the Hey Porsche voice assistant is now faster and smarter. It helps the driver locate parking spots and charging stations, controls music playback, and answers questions concerning general matters and the latest news. The system uses two microphones to determine who is speaking. Even if the driver and front-seat passenger speak over one another, confusion does not ensue: the system focuses on who spoke first. The voice assistant now features 23 languages.
