A Tribute to Transfăgărășan

Celebrating two icons: The legendary Transfăgărășan highway in Romania has been a favourite among car enthusiasts for years. Known as “the road that touches the clouds,” it is hailed as one of the best drives in the world. In 2024, as the highway turned 50, the Porsche 911 Turbo model, also celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Porsche Central and Eastern Europe wanted to honour both icons in Porsche’s “Tribute to Transfăgărășan” by bringing together automotive history, breathtaking scenery, and the driving passion of the Porsche community. Porsche Club Romania also joined in the festivities, as they celebrated 15 years of uniting Porsche fans.

Transfăgărășan Getaway

Porsche kicked off the Tribute with the Transfăgărășan Getaway, a multiday driving event with Porsche Club members from ten countries. Over 110 Porsche vehicles and 200 guests embarked on a journey to experience the unique character of the famed alpine road. The heart of the Getaway was, of course, the drive itself, as it allowed Porsche owners to experience the unique character of the winding roads and stunning vistas of this legendary driving destination behind the wheel of their own sports cars.

The Turbocharged Legacy Drive

This passion for driving was also underlined in the second big event that united the Transfăgărășan and Porsche Turbo. First introduced at the Paris Motor Show in 1974, the 911 Turbo redefined the concept of a sports car, becoming the fastest of its time. For fifty years, it has continued to innovate and never stopped to amaze car enthusiasts. To celebrate this milestone, Porsche brought together the most legendary Turbo models that shaped the brand’s history – including the 930 3.3, 964 3.6, 993 Turbo S, and 992 Turbo S – and invited over 60 journalists from 16 countries to experience the thrill of driving them on one of the greatest roads in the world, the Transfăgărășan highway.

A Unique Experience

What unfolded, truly was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The Transfăgărășan, a 151-kilometre stretch of winding asphalt through the Făgăraș Mountains, provided the perfect backdrop to test the dynamic capabilities of Porsche’s turbo line-up, from heritage models to contemporary powerhouses like the Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid and Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid with GT Package. With its numerous hairpin turns, viaducts, and bridges, the road offered a thrilling driving experience, testing the skills of even the most seasoned drivers. The route, reaching an altitude of 2,042 metres near Bâlea Lake, presented a unique blend of challenging corners and breathtaking scenery, and allowed participants to fully immerse themselves in the spirit of Porsche driving, experiencing the connection between car and road on one of Europe’s most iconic driving routes.

To make the event even more special, Porsche turned the participants’ hotel into “The House of Turbo.” This temporary museum showcased key moments in Turbo history, with displays like the first twin-charged engine and parts from iconic models like the 997. Outside, guests admired a 991 Turbo S Exclusive Series on static display.

Two Icons Meet: The Exclusive Tribute 911 Carrera 4 GTS

But Porsche wanted to do more. After all, the Porsche 911 and the Transfăgărășan highway are made for each other. Two icons embodying high performance, excitement, and a thrilling driving experience. They have formed an unbeatable duo and created unforgettable moments together for decades. Countless historic Porsche models conquered the Transfăgărășan’s winding roads, proving their power and agility, and showcasing the incredible connection between driver, car, and road. So, as part of the event and to also highlight the local premiere of the newest 911 GTS model, the first road-going hybrid 911 Porsche, in partnership with Exclusive Manufaktur, unveiled a 911 Carrera 4 GTS with a “Tribute to Transfăgărășan” package. This exclusive offering pays homage to the breathtaking Romanian road with unique aesthetic details and as only ten of these vehicles will be produced, they are a collector’s dream.

Where New Memories and Heritage Meet

The “Tribute to Transfăgărășan” was more than a series of events; it was a celebration of driving automotive history and innovation. It brought together Porsche engineering, the beauty of one of Europe’s greatest roads, and the shared love of cars that unite people across the world. And it proved once again that the Transfăgărășan and Porsche are made for each other. Together, they create unforgettable experiences and new memories while honouring legacy and heritage.
