The Porsche 959 and Carrera GT celebrate their anniversary.

Two super sports cars, two anniversaries: The Porsche 959 (left) and Carrera GT recently got together for a special occasion. The 959, which was unveiled in 1985, turned 40 this year. On its debut, the sports car immediately secured its place in Porsche history as the world’s fastest street-legal production car at that time. The Carrera GT, which also boasts super sports car performance, turned 25 this year. With its V10 mid-engine and carbon fiber body, it was designed to be a race car for the road with motorsport genes from the very start. The two cars got together with old friends to celebrate their anniversaries. Roland Kussmaul (left), a test driver and engineer at Porsche for four decades, piloted the 959 in the 1986 Paris–Dakar Rally. Walter Röhrl, development driver at Porsche and rally legend, played a key role in the development of the Carrera GT. At the world premiere of the close-to-series study in Paris in 2000, he drove the prototype from Place Charles de Gaulle, along the Champs-Élysées, to the Louvre.
